🎶 Somewhere there’s a place, a place where we belong. Yes, it really does exist. Applegate Studios is here. Take a giant step. Get unstuck in time. Click rewind, press unwind, then the reset button just to be sure. The space is here. Find the time. Find your groove. Search for those lost tracks. Find some tasty new ones. Make some bold strokes, or at least get it started, chip away at it “piano piano”, fire up the kiln, let it all melt away, anneal, and soak while you kick back & relax in the beautiful countryside. 🎶

Applegate Studios is a multi-medium creative retreat set on 18 idyllic pastoral acres 6 miles outside of Ithaca, NY. Its proximity to the vibrant small city of Ithaca and the beautiful, quiet property have proven to be a winning combination through the years.

The property has three main structures that have been undergoing constant transformation over the last 17 years to reach its present incarnation. The early 1800’s Farmhouse has been a popular 3 bedroom Airbnb retreat for couples, families, and get togethers for the last 10 years. During that same period the starkly contrasting modern lofted Studio next door has been another very popular Airbnb retreat hosting multitudes of happy musicians, couples, and creative folk looking for a relaxing spot in the country. The third main structure, the Barn, is a wonderfully converted 2 story glass casting/sculpture studio, and seasonal living space.

The Farmhouse and The Studio can be combined for a sprawling 4 bedroom, 2 kitchen retreat space that takes you on a walk through time from 1810 to 2024. Individually or together, both of these spaces are ideal spots for creative retreats, writing retreats, restorative retreats, city getaways, reunions, and other gatherings.

All 3 spaces will soon be available to book for hosting workshops and retreats in music and many other artistic mediums. Stay tuned to this site for details.

Applegate Studios

Applegate Studios is nestled on 18 picturesque acres 6 miles from the edge of the wonderful small city of Ithaca, NY. The beautiful and distinctive property provides the perfect backdrop for a tranquil retreat overlooking a serene pond and 50 acres of rolling farmland. It is located in a peaceful country setting not far from town, making it a convenient base for exploring wine country and the most scenic parks and waterfalls in the area.

The natural setting of Applegate Studios is ideally located between two of the most beautiful waterfall-filled state parks, Treman and Taughannock, both approximately 5 miles away. Additionally, the property is well-positioned for wine country tours, providing easy access to both the Seneca and Cayuga wine trails.

The land that the retreat sits on is a combination of a spacious lawn surrounded by mature trees, a shared pond, fields, and a trail through wooded wetlands. Each of the rentals looks upon the views in different directions and each has some private outdoor area.

Privacy and peace are very important in creating and maintaining a retreat atmosphere. This has always been a primary consideration as the property has developed. My goal is to give space and peace in which to enjoy and create, and then to develop some interactive areas that are available when desired. A disc course/ sculpture trail, fire pit, bocce ball court, field bocce, workshops, and musical events are all in the works to fill that piece of the ever evolving puzzle of Applegate Studios.

The Setting

I purchased the Applegate house in 2006 to be near my parents who lived in Cooperstown New York at the time.

The natural beauty and vibrant music scene are what drew me to Ithaca originally. The other driving force in choosing Ithaca was the proximity to The Corning Museum of glass due to my desire to explore glass casting as my next medium.

I was originally searching for a rental that could accommodate a huge home made glass fusing kiln . No rental appeared so I looked at just one that was for sale.  I immediately loved the property upon driving in, but it didn’t include the barn to the right, nor the field to the left. I was able to buy the field simultaneously for protection, but the barn took 10 more years to acquire from the neighbor. In 2022 I was able to add 11 more acres, the final missing piece of the beautiful 18 acre retreat that now exists.

“The Farmhouse Retreat @ Applegate Studios” which has become a popular Airbnb rental had great bones to begin with. The old hand hewn ceiling beams were one of my first loves of the house after just spending 10 years in New Mexico and living in and visiting many character filled homes. Many nice touches were added by previous owners (there had been quite a few:) like skylights and redone hardwood floors to keep it up with the times.

A metal  “Morton” building had been attached to the farmhouse in the 1970’s  to work on the previous owner’s large boat. The time wasn’t right for the glass studio yet, but with quite a bit of work over time and an addition added, this basic metal shell was transformed into another popular retreat listed on Airbnb as “Artist/Musician Retreat @ Applegate Studios”.

The Barn is the third of the 3 major structures on the property to be renovated. The farmhouse and barn were the original structures on a large Revolutionary War plot of land and were built by the Rolfe family.  The barn was moved from its original location 30 yards to the north and pieced together in its present location as a large chicken shack by the McFall family in the 1940’s.

With a great deal of help from an Amish crew and a few other talented builders, The Barn renovation is now 85% complete. Skylit upstairs painting/ design area & crashing room, soapstone lined downstairs kitchen with wood stove, kiln room, mold making room, glass cold shop space, and more exposed hand hewn beams are some of the highlights. This studio is expected to launch in 2024. While primarily built as a glass casting studio, it will be ideal for many sculptural and visual arts mediums including painting. Behind the barn glamping areas are being developed for workshop participants and others.

When the final 11 acres were added a disc golf course was roughed in around the perimeter. I had long hoped to have a sculpture park in the field. My new plan is to incorporate sculpture with the disc course. I would like to curate sculptures some temporary and some permanent for each hole.
